Subscriptions amounted to £17,871. Each subscriber bought a ticket to a draw for a lottery of works of art up to £300 in value. In 1847 17,020 tickets were sold.

I have no idea whether he won anything. He wasn't discouraged, whatever happened, and had another flutter in the next year.
