The “Bills and Answers” and the “Depositions” for the reigns of Elizabeth, James I, and Charles I were calendared in seven volumes in the reign of Queen Anne, by direction of Richard Topham, who died 7th September 1730. In the calendar for James I is this note:

“The Bills and Answers, etc., in the Reigne of King James ye jst were sorted and placed in the White Tower, and this Alphabet thereof made in the time and by the direction of Richard Topham, Esq., Master of this office. Anno D'ni 1707.”

These calendars are not quite exhaustive; there is a further series of “Miscellaneous Chancery Proceedings”, Henry VI to James II, with indices nominum in three MS. volumes, while some few others as yet uncalendared are referred to in Appendix II of the Deputy Keeper's Fifth Report.

The present volumes of the Index Library contain the whole of the first volume of Topham's index for the reign of Charles I. “Versus” has been substituted for “contra”, while other latin expressions have been translated. It has not been thought needful to indicate, as in the manuscript, the precise nature, as bill, answer, reply, etc., of the pleading indexed. Occasionally some errors in the original manuscript have been corrected by checking the documents themselves.
