1871 : Mr Pluckrose is the Starter for a Pigeon Race

PIGEON FLYING

GREENWICH. - The annual sweepstakes was held on Monday, Oct 9, at Mr Thomas’s, the Ironfounders’ Arms, Cold Bath, Greenwich, from Lambeth Bridge, for a silver watch and money prizes. The first prize, the silver watch and £3, was won by Mr Allen’s mealy pied in 7min 28sec; the second of £2 10s by Mr Jones’s blue in 7min 43sec; the third of £1 5s by Mr Woodgate’s grizzle in 7min 48sec. Birds belonging to 27 members contended in the match, and the wind was blowing from the north-east all the time. Messrs Burchall and Sales were timekeepers, Messrs J. Beavis and Carter umpires, and Mr Pluckrose starter.
