BRENTWOOD SCHOOL SPEECH DAY

Brentwood School Speech Day was held on Saturday (5 July 1941), Sir Herbert Cunliffe, chairman of the Governors, presiding, and the prizes were distributed by Brig.-Gen. C. H. de Rougemont, C.B.

The Headmaster, Mr. J. F. Hough, congratulated those who had won scholarships, including Fothergill, open exhibition in English at Emmanuel; Trythall and Collins, Kitchener Scholarships, and R. G. Cox, E. S. Kershaw, A. Durrell, and P. C. Collins, Essex County major scholarships. Some parents had suggested that the school should be evacuated, but having made A.R.P. preparations in advance, he did not consider it desirable to run away because of possible danger. Some parents had removed their sons, but nearly all had returned. During the winter many boys left home daily in the darkness and after nights disturbed by raids, yet he rarely had the excuse sent that a boy was late because of raids.
