He died on 15 August 1940, aged 56, and was buried in the Durham Rural District cemetery.

He lived at 4 Dene View, Ferry Hill, Cassop-cum-Quarrington and died at Dean House Farm, Cassop.

He was the victim of an air raid while returning home from work as a miner at Thornley colliery.
