Wendens Ambo and Cambridge Plucks
Origins
This tree starts with Stephen Pluck (PL 406) who was baptised in Arkesden in 1764 (see Tree 4). He was the youngest of the five surviving children of William Pluck of Littlebury and his second wife, Elizabeth Wootten. Stephen married twice: his first wife, Mary Linsdell, had five children and his second wife, Sarah Eldret, one. He moved from Arkesden to Wensden Ambo before marrying, but since they are neighbouring villages he didn't move far.
Points of interest
- This tree is complicated slightly by a cousin-marriage. Henry Pluck (PL494) married his first cousin, Mary Pluck (PL505) in West Ham in 1852. Their family can be found in Tree 9.
- There is another unusual relationship of a different kind. The first wife of Henry Pluck (PL518) died in Cambridge in 1890. A little over a year later his daughter Emma married James Freestone. Another year passes and James's mother marries Emma's father.
- Robert Pluck (PL523) married Margaret Holland in 1880 and they had four children, the eldest being the patriotically named Nelson. Margaret had two children by a previous marriage.

3401 | BROWN | Percy | There are a lot of Percy Browns to choose from but this is probably the one born in the Hitchin RD in Q1 1887 3a, 490. His probate record tends to confirm this: From the National Probate Calendar of 1956: BROWN Percy otherwise Percy Collington of 53 Norton-road Letchworth Hertfordshire died 14 December 1955 at The Letchworth Hospital Letchford. Probate Peterborough 27 January to Edith Ellen Brown widow and Reginald Hartley solicitor. Effects: £2089-10s-1d. |

1605 | FREESTONE | James | His birth was registered as John James. He appears to have used James throughout his life. James died in Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, on 19 December 1931. Administration was granted to his widow, Emma Freestone. Effects £657-2s-3d. |
0522 | GAPES | Eliza | C1851;C1861; C1871; C1891: 65, born Wendens Ambo |
0502 | GUNN | Ann | C1841: Ann's husband, Joseph, is missing. The family, living in Duck Street, Wendens Ambo, also includes a Harry Pluck, 20, ag. lab., - possibly daughter Mary's future husband? |
2397 | HOLLAND | Edith | C1881: recorded as Edith Holland, step daughter. Not found in later censuses. There is a possible death record: Edith Holland, Saffron Walden, December 1956, age 80. |
0563 | HOLLAND | Margaret | The 1881 census suggests that Margaret has two children by a previous
marriage: Edith Holland, born c. 1878 and William C Holland, born c 1880.
Margaret may have been a widow when she married Robert - there is only
one possible death of a husband in the locality (Charles Holland d. Q3
1876, Saffron Walden 4a, 252, aged 47) or Edith could be the result of
a less formal liaison. GRO certificates might provide the evidence. If
Margaret was married to Charles then William could not be his son. He
was probably Robert's son and he is almost certainly the William who
is recorded as William Pluck in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. In 1881 the family are living next door to a Holland family. C1901; C1911: widow, age 53, born Wicken, 7 children, 5 still living. Her son, William Charles, is still living with her, there is also a lodger. |
2398 | HOLLAND/PLUCK | William Charles | C1881: recorded as William Holland, step-son of Robert Pluck. C1891: recorded as William Pluck, son. He is almost certainly Robert's son (see more extensive note under his mother's record). C1911: age 34, born Saffron Walden, single, a general labourer. He died in 1965, aged 85. I haven't found a marriage record. |
3743 | HOYE | Robert | C1851; C1861. He left a Will. HOYE Robert: The Will of Robert Hoye late of Woodford Green in the County of Essex deceased who died 27 June 1868 at Woodford Green aforesaid was proved at the Principal Registry by the oaths of Joseph Perrin of Whitehall-road Woodford Green of the County aforesaid Bootmaker Ann Hoye of Woodford Green aforesaid Widow the Relict and Ann Wallis Hoye of Woodford Green aforesaid Spinster the Daughter the Executors. National Probate Calendar 8 September 1868. Effects: less than £200. |
1602 | JEFFS | Louisa | C1901: age 33, born Hemingford Grey, she has a daughter, Louisa, aged 11 months. C1911: age 44, born Hemingford Grey, widow with two daughters: Louisa May age 10 and Ellen, age 6. Entered, but crossed through: years married 7, 3 children 3 still living. Louisa was married in Q1 1900, which implies her husband died in 1907 which fits a misleading death registration (see notes on Frederick). |
0510 | MASON | Sarah | She was about 25 when she married John. C1841; C1851: age 40, born
Ickleton She must have died somewhere between the 1851 census and 1860 when John remarried. There is no GRO death record but I am reasonably certain that the burial recorded is for Sarah. |
1606 | MIDDLETON | George Henry David | C1911: see note for Clara Pluck. There is a record in the probate calendar: MIDDLETON George Henry David of 11 Emlyn's Buildings, Eton, Buckinghamshire died 16 March 1951. have been married for 14 years and have 5 children, all living. Alice's
married sister, Clara and her husband Alfred, a house decorator, are
visiting. Clara has a baby daughter. The Probate Calendar for 1958 has: MIDDLETON Alice Elizabeth of 11 Emlyn Buildings Brocas Street Eton Buckinghamshire, widow, died 12 October 1958 at White Lodge, Court Road, Maidenhead Bucks. Probate London 5 November to Bertie Middleton foreman fitter. Effects: £520-12s-11d. |
2302 | PLUCK | Alice Lucy | C1901; C1911: living in Linton; she is a parlourmaid in the household of Ernest Vivian Wilkin, a yeast merchant (five in the family and four servants). She did not marry. |
0504 | PLUCK | Ann | Ann is in the 1851 census of Woodford with three children, Ann, Mary and Sarah. Her brother, Joseph, and Robert's sister, Elizabeth, are also living with them. Her husband, Robert, is a letter carrier and Elizabeth is a letter receiver. C1861: Ann now has a son Robert, aged 5. Still living in Woodford. C1871: age 52, a widow. |
0495 | PLUCK | Anne | The 1861 census of Wendens has four children: Edward (19), Stanley

4612 | PLUCK | Ella | C1891: age 1. Ella married in 1909 but I have not been able to determine who she married. The relevant page has only three entries on it. The other two married as was confirmed by the 1911 census. |

1601 | PLUCK | Frederick James | C1881; C1901: living in Cow and Hare Yard, St Ives, age 31, worker in a flour mill. C1911: his wife describes herself as a widow. Frederick's death is recorded as James Frederick, but I have no doubt that this is the correct record in the absence of any Frederick James record at any time between1901 and 1963. The year fits well with Louisa's record of a seven year marriage in the 1911 census. |
0515 | PLUCK | George | C1851; C1861: age 11, living with his parents in Ugley; not found in subsequent censuses. There is a possible death in Lanchester in 1886 age 36. |
