Notes on Tree 1007

Epping and London Pluckroses

Origins

This tree starts with Daniel Pluckrose in the Harlow area but I have no information (at the moment) about Daniel's origins. It is possible that the Pluckroses came from the adjacent parish of Gilston, where Pluckroses have lived since at least 1620, and where half a dozen Daniels were baptised over the following 160 years.

Some members of the family moved southward to the Epping and Cheshunt area. Later the move continued into the east end of London (in particular Hackney and Bethnal Green) and a sizeable contingent moved south of the Thames into the Lambeth/Southwark area. John Pluckrose (PL0867) - a grandson of Daniel - was a blacksmith who moved north to Derby in his youth. He married in Derby in 1815 but didn't stay there long and returned south again.

Further generations

I am reasonably confident about the rest of the tree which has been compiled mainly from BMD and census records. There will be omissions, of course - the usual ones being children who were born and died between census dates and are unassignable because there was more than one Pluckrose family in the area at the time.

0864PLUCKROSEDanielNothing definite is know about Daniel's origins. Gilston (and Eastwick) is a suburb of present day Harlow and there is a possible baptism in Gilston: 6 April 1735 Daniel Pluckrose, son of John and Frances. This would make Daniel 28/29 when Daniel Jnr was baptised.
No suitable burial found yet.
0861PLUCKROSEDanielHe married the widow, Mary Stoten, in 1786. He was a witness at the marriage of Sarah STOTEN in 1796. (LM)
C1841: He is in the union workhouse at Theydon Gardon, aged 79, a blacksmith, born in the County (of Essex).
0863PLUCKROSEDanielDaniel was born in Harlow but appears to have moved to Huntingdon and married there in 1811. However, he seems to have returned to Harlow and features in a local trade directory dated 1839 as a blacksmith. It is not known when, or where, his son James was born.
The connection of the Huntingdon and Harlow Daniels is based on (1) the occupation of blacksmith; (2) the correct age.

The record of her marriage to Henry Bristow gives her age as 19 and her father's name as Henry. Her death index record lists her as Elizabeth M A Bristow.
1063PLUCKROSEEmmaC1911: Husband Edward is a gardener. Living at Lodge, Abbey Mills Pumping Station, West Ham (presumably where Edward worked). Married 18 years, 8 children (15-2 months), 6 still living.

There is a death record which could be Emma: Emma Pite, Jun 1983, Sleaford (Lincs) 7, 1872, age 102. Born 13 June 1881.
1060PLUCKROSEEmma AnnC1861: infant;
4282PLUCKROSEEva DorothyKnown from 1939 electoral register.
2794PLUCKROSEFlorenceShe appears (identified as sister, age 11) in the 1901 census in the household of her brother Benjamin (PL1080). She doesn't appear to be in the GRO birth index. However, there is scope for confusion with another Florence, daughter of James Pluckrose and Amy Crouch, also born in 1890, but who died in 1893 aged 3. This Florence (PL1994 in Tree1010) appears with these parents in the 1891 census.

1050PLUCKROSEJohnC1861: scholar. He was admitted to Great Ormond Street Hospital on 3 Nov 1858 (aged 5) suffering from a diseased hip (probably tuberculosis). He stayed for 25 days (see www.smallandspecial.org).
His marriage certificate gives his occupation as blacksmith. When his son Alfred married in 1901 he described his deceased father's occupation as 'painter'. His daughter, Louisa, did the same when she married in 1907.
4426PLUCKROSEJohn Albert FrederickC1911. He died at the early age of 32, administration of his estate was granted to his parents, which tends to confirm that he did not marry.

0866PLUCKROSEMaryThe 1851 census says that she was born in Latton ca 1790. However, there were no Pluckrose baptisms in Latton at that time. She was probably baptised in Harlow as were her brothers.
Although her baptism is not recorded (1) Daniel and Mary were the only Pluckroses in the area at the time, (2) she appears to have registered her father's death.

4279PLUCKROSEOscar AlfredUnusually he seems to have two GRO death records: (1) As Oscar Alfred Pluckrose in the Swale RD in Kent and (2) as Alfred Oscar in the Shepway RD, also in Kent. All other details are identical, including the volume and page numbers.
He seems to have dropped the Oscar in his name early in life, or reversed the order of his names - probably in response to anti-German feeling ca 1914-18.

C1851;C1861: scholar; C1901: coachsmith;.
GRO index shows Stephen Pluckrose and Elizabeth Jane Pluckrose marrying in St Olaves RD in Q2 1896 (1d, 512). Is this Elizabeth Jane Pemberton, the widow of John Pluck, Stephen's younger brother)? Her age (in the 1901 census) fits.
If this is so, the marriage was illegal since it fell within the 'prohibited degrees'. It wasn't until 1907 that marriage to a deceased brother's spouse was allowed.
Nevertheless, I believe that such marriages were not uncommon.
1081PLUCKROSEStephenC1881; C1891: coffee house assistant (in his father's coffee house); C1911: labourer (shipyard).
