Notes on Tree 1009

Wicklow Plucks

Origins

I suspect that Wicklow is the origin of most, if not all, of the Irish branch of the Plucks. Where they came from before this is still a mystery. I have other Plucks from the Wicklow area who I am still unable to fit into a tree. I think it is very likely that the Dublin Plucks come from the Wicklow branch.

Points of interest

This tree now incorporates the former Twig 5 - Christopher Pluck (PL1826) and his family.

3022 BURNS Rose Ann C1861: NF; C1871: age 38, a dressmaker, born Liverpool; C1881: age 40; The GRO indexes record her birth ii Q4 1840 and death in Q2 1890 at the age of 58. Either I have a wrong record, or there is an error in her recorded age ( probably the latter).
1827 BYRNE Mary Both parties resident in Trooperstown at the time of their marriage in Rathdrum.
1833 DIGAN Annie There is an earlier birth: June 1913 Ann E J Pluck, Birkenhead 8a 876, mother's maiden name DEEGAN. Not out of the question since Monica was born a couple of years before their marriage and Christopher was born in the same GRO quarter as their marriage. Ann is PL 1894.
3014 EDWARDS David C1901: a widow, living with her brother, Timothy (also wid).
2912 MCDONNELL Margaret C1851: age 30, born in Ireland; C1861: age 36, born in Ireland; C1871: age 40; C1881: age 65. Still living at 17 Portland Street at the time of her death.
1894 PLUCK Anne E J There is small query over the assignment of this birth which took place in June 1913, [Ann E J Pluck, Birkenhead 8a 876, mother's maiden name DEEGAN]. this is not out of the question since Christopher and Anne were well aquainted before they married in the June quarter of 1916. Monica was born a couple of years before their marriage and Christopher was born in the same quarter as their marriage.
1826 PLUCK Christopher This family is known mostly from censuses : in 1851 they are living as boarders at 3 Snowdon Street, in the parish of St Michael in Liverpool, in the household of Owen and Sarah Mechan (also Irish). Owen is a cooper, and probably the employer of young Christopher, who is a journeyman cooper. Laurence is only four months old. Christopher and Mary are found in the 1871 and 1881 censuses (living at 65 Latimer Street, St Martin) but are not found in 1861.
This small branch probably died out, since Laurence died young and Francis died at the age of 33, apparently without marrying.
Christopher was born in 1828 (1851 census, or in 1831 (1871 census) or in 1832 (1881 census) or in 1832 (death record). In spite of this I am reasonably confident that he is the Christopher who was christened in 1823.
There is no marriage record in the GRO index - they probably married in Ireland.
Of the four children, only Mary's birth appears to have been registered - registration was not compulsory until 1875, however.
1832 PLUCK Christopher Not found in any UK censuses.
1828 PLUCK Francis - possibly working for his father, a "master carter.
1830 PLUCK Honoria The only records for Honoria are in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. I have not found a marriage or death entry in the GRO indexes. She may have returned to Ireland.
1919 PLUCK Hugh There are two possible spouses for Hugh. Mary Brien as selected here (no particular evidence) and Elizabeth (possibly Byrne), who had two children with a Hugh Pluck, Catherine in 1840 and Lawrence in 1842.
2911 PLUCK James C1841: age 40, labourer, born in Ireland, living with Bridget (relationship uncertain); C1851: surname recorded as Plunkett but there is no doubt about his identity as he has a wife named Margaret, and his widowed mother in law, Ann McDonald, is living with them; aged 45, born in Ireland. C1861: Living at 17 Portland Street, Liverpool, a corn porter, age 50, born in Ireland. C1871: still at 17 Portland Street (age 48); now sharing the house with Lawrence Pluck (30, a carter) his wife Bridget (33) both born in Ireland, and their sons Lawrence (7) and James (3).; C1881: still at Portland Street, age 70, general labourer. Still living at 17 Portland Street at the time of his death.
3002 PLUCK James C1861
3015 PLUCK John C1841: born Ireland c 1822.
1890 PLUCK John In 1911 Census he is living in Gordon Street, Dublin, with his wife of 12 years, Margaret, 10 year old daughter, Bridget and 3 year old son, Daniel. The census records that they have three other children (not yet found). He worked as a Tram Motor Man.
1831 PLUCK Laurence C1851: aged 4 months, born in Ireland.< br>C1861: the family is not found
C1871 and C1881: Not found
there are three possible deaths in Liverpool in 1851, 1852 and 1856.
1887 PLUCK Lawrence Lawrence is obviously related to his wife, Margaret Pluck, in some way - but the nature of this relationship has not yet been established. C1901: a carter carman, living in Birkenhead.
There is a Michael Pluck born in Birkenhead in Q2 1902; he could be a child of Lawrence and Margaret, however, he doesn't appear in the 1911 census, neither is there a death recorded between 1902 and 1911. Perhaps the child of a visiting Pluck from Ireland?
3003 PLUCK Margaret C1871; C1881: a kitchen maid in a pub, unmarried; C1891: she is now married to James Boag, age 30, Donkeyman, born Liverpool and has two children: Margaret A age 2, born Bootle, and James age 3, born Bootle, and they are living at 58 Boreland Street, Bootle, Lancs. Bridget Pluck, and her son Lawrence were living at 42 Boreland Street in 1891, and had moved to 66 by 1901.
2792 PLUCK Margaret C1901;
1829 PLUCK Mary C1881: not found. Mary may have married; there is a possible marriage in Birkenhead in December 1895.
3014 PLUCK Mary Ann C1841; C1851: age 17, born Ireland. C1901: living with her wid. brother Timothy; age 42, a domestic servant.
Her death in 1906, with a recorded age of 48, while consistent with the 1901 census it is a long way from the age of someone who was clearly recorded as 17 in the 1851 census (who would have been 72). I don't think we have the wrong person, though, since her brother's age in 1901 was recorded as 47, when in fact he was 69. Perhaps Irish years are longer than English years.
3018 PLUCK Miles C1841: living in Dukinfield in Smiths Yard, working as a piecer, born Ireland c 1816. Also living in Smiths Yard are William and Bridget Pluck with their 6 children.
The Dublin Heritage website gives his date of birth AND date of baptism as 27 Jan 1816.
1926 PLUCK Patrick Living in Trooperstown
3013 PLUCK Timothy C1841; C1851: age 19, cooper's apprentice, born Ireland; C1861: NF; C1871: a cooper, age 38; C1881: age 50, a cooper; C1891: age 59, wid. a cooper; C1901: age 47, wid, a cooper, living with his widowed sister, Mary Ann Edwards.
The evidence for Timothy's second marriage is circumstantial. There isn't another Timothy who fits.
1918 PLUCK/WINDSOR Patrick born out of wedlock
3161 WILLIAMS Kathleen P There is another birth that might belong to this family: April 1987 Winchester 20 2360 mmn Williams (GRO index)
3016 [PLUCK] Bridget C1841: living with James (PL2911) relationship is uncertain. A death certificate is needed.
