Notes on Tree 11

The Descendants of Jabez Pluck of Braintree

Origins

This tree links directly to Tree 8 - the Wendens Ambo branch. Jabez and his wife Elizabeth Woolfe (Betsy) can be found in both trees.

Points of interest

  1. The 'Braintree and Bocking' edition of the Archive Photographs series, published by the Chalford Publishing Company (ISBN 0-7524-0129-7), has a photograph of Bank Street (taken in 1910) showing the premises of Frederick Pluck, 'Tailors, Hatters, Hosiers and Outfitters'. They record that 'Jebez (sic) Pluck established the business in the 1960s and also had a Witham branch'. Frederick (PL774) was the youngest son of Jabez (PL501).
  2. The same publication also has a photograph taken in 1911 showing the Bank Street premises of Elizabeth Pluck, the draper. Elizabeth is almost certainly Elizabeth Woolf (PL769) the wife of Jabez.
  3. An unusually large number of people in this tree left Wills.

3913 WALLER Kathleen Lucy
It took some effort to find Kate's full name. The GRO marriage index had five names on the relevant register page: three male and two female. Neither female was named Kate as I expected from examining the 1911 census. I was able to match up two pairs of names with the aid of the 1911 census, leaving William PLUCK with no partner.
Fortunately Kate left a Will when she died in 1961(see below). Working on the basis that Kathleen Dorothy MITCHELL was her married daughter I looked for the birth of a Kathleen Dorothy PLUCK in the GRO birth index in the period after September 1911 (when the mother's maiden name first started to be recorded in the index).
I found Kathleen D PLUCK in Q1 1912 in the Wandsworth registration district where I expected the family to be living. The mother's maiden name was WALLER.
It didn't take too long to find a Kate WALLER born about 1880 in the Streatham area: Q1 1881, Kathleen Lucy WALLER, Lambeth, 1d, 521.
WILL: PLUCK, Kate of Southwood, Oldfield Road, Bickley Kent widow died 22 December 1961. Probate London 29 March to Frank William Pluck accounts clerk and Kathleen Dorothy Mitchell married woman. Effects £5014 14s.
