Notes on Tree 13

Marylebone and Tonbridge Plucks

Origins

This tree starts with Thomas Pluck who was baptised in Saffron Walden in 1796. Some time later the who family moved to Kent. The Kent branch was founded by Thomas's elder brother, William and his wife, Sarah Ann Wilmott. Thomas married Elizabeth Savery in Sheerness, where their first child (also Thomas) was born, but soon after they moved to Tonbridge where Thomas made a living as a plumber and glazier.

Thomas's grandson, Charles Pluck, who was born in 1844, emigrated to New Zealand with his family on 18 April 1874. This branch of the Plucks can be found in Tree14.

Points of interest

  1. The marriage of Thomas to Elizabeth Savery has not yet been found but Lesley Collins has found a record of the Banns of Marriage in the Eastchurch register (27 November, 4 December, 11 December 1814) and it is reasonable to assume that the marriage took place soon after. This is the vital missing link that has allowed the Marylebone and New Zealand branches to be joined to the main tree.
  2. The VRI is confusing about William (PL1543) the youngest child of Thomas and Elizabeth. It shows William as born on 24 June 1818 and christened on 12 August 1833. This is not a baptism at the age of 15, as one might suspect, since the 1851 census shows William as being born around 1833. This is either a clerical error, or another William was born earlier who subsequently died.
  3. William (the youngest son of Thomas and Elizabeth) married Ann Wells in 1858. They had six children in six years, the last one being born some months after the death of William. Their three children do not appear with their parents in the 1861 census. By the time of the 1871 census the widowed Ann, and four of her children, are back with her parents. Her father, the widowed William Wells is described as a farmer of 130 acres employing six labourers and six boys. The eleven year old Kate is at the George Inn with her uncle John Wells, his wife, Sarah and a nine-month old daughter. Nine year old Mary Elizabeth is with her uncle, John Pluck (PL 1546), her aunt and her grandfather, Thomas Pluck (PL71).
