Descendants of William Pluck and Elizabeth Bayford

Origins of William Pluck

His youngest child was born in 1832. His wife was a widow in 1851. He doesn't appear in the GRO death index so was probably dead by Sep 1837 when civil registration began. When his daughter, Emma, married in 1855 and his son Stephen married in 1861 their father's occupation was given as 'sawyer'.

His origin is still a mystery. Unfortunately, he appears to have died before Sep 1837 so determining his age is impossible. I don't have any likely candidates in my Custodian database, neither have I been able to find anything on-line.

3477 ALEXANDER Emma C1861; C1871; C1881; C1891: she was in the Edmonton workhouse (domestic servant, widow). She was a widow (Emma Kirk) when she married Stephen. The marriage certificate records her father as William Alexander. Her previous marriage took place in Q2 1847, Edmonton 3 101, her husband was Edward Kirk who died in Q4 1860: Edmonton 3a 106. She doesn't appear to have had any children.
2417 BAYFORD Elizabeth The 1851 census records that she was born in Bishops Stortford ca 1800. The 1819 marriage in Chingford, in conjunction with the 1800 baptism in Bishops Stortford, confirms her identity. Her parents were William and Elizabeth Bayford.
3495 CLARK Eva It seems likely that she remarried after the death of John in 1934: Eva Pluck=Charles Payne: Q2 1935, Edmonton 3a 2413. A likely death is: Eva Payne: Q1 1972, Enfield 5b, 49, born 29 Dec 1894.
3499 COLLIER Ronald R He died at the age of 24 less than two years after his marriage to Evelyn.
2437 DUNEVILLE Katherine Maria I can't find a birth in the GRO index. C1891: listed as Maria; C1901: listed as Kate. Works in Eley's cartridge factory. Her marriage certificate records her father was Matthew Duneville, a shoemaker. Mary Pluck was a witness.
3494 ELMES Thomas A possible birth in Edmonton in1878.
4508 GOULD Caroline Emily She travelled to Australia to be reunited with her husband on the ship HMT Zealandia, arriving in Melbourne on 7 January 1919. There is an Ancestry tree which records five children but with no sources quoted.
2434 HILL Fanny Elizabeth C1901
3507 HILLIER Deborah J Unusually, Deborah Hillier and David Pluck appear to have married twice. The first occasion was in Q4 1981 in Swindon and the second was in Q3 1989. A possible explanation for this is that they divorced at some time between these two dates. David was just turned 18 when he first married, and Deborah was probably of a similar age (there were two possible births in Swindon at this time: in Q1 1962 and Q2 1964 - both Deborah J Hillier). There don't appear to have been any children of this marriage.
2423 LEVERETT Sarah C1861: with her four sons and her brother, Richard Leverett); C1881 a widow, living in Edmonton with four of her children; C1891 living next door to her son James and his family.
2424 LEVERETT/PLUCK Thomas He was first discovered in the 1861 census, age 7. However, a birth record has not been not found in the GRO index . Since he was born 3-4 years before his parents' marriage it is almost certain that the relevant record is: Q3 1854, Thomas Leverett, Edmonton 3a 120. He has not been found in any post-1861 records.
3475 MILLINGTON May Pauline The GRO index has two names for the marriage record: May P MILLINGTON and May P LOWE. She was born May P Millington in Islington in 1915. She married Ernest A Lowe in Islington in Q3 1937, and then William L Goodman in Islington in Q2 1940. I have not been able to find out what happened to either of these earlier husbands.
2433 MILLS Nellie Pentney Nellie was born in Sydney in 1889 but came to England early in life as she appears in the 1891 census aged 16 months.
See note for her mother, Charlotte Penteney.
2432 MILLS/PLUCK Lily See note for her mother, Charlotte Penteney. C1911. No marriage or death record found.
2431 MILLS/PLUCK May See note for her mother, Charlotte Penteney. Not found in the 1911 census. She probably died in Chelsea in 1915. A certificate is needed for confirmation, but there is no other likely candidate in the GRO birth index.
2430 PENTENEY Charlotte Charlotte was born in St Luke, Middlesex, in 1864 and, in 1887 when aged 23, went to Australia, apparently unaccompanied. A daughter, Nellie, was born in in Sydney in 1889. The birth record shows her father as James Mills. She and Nellie must have returned to England not long after the birth because they are both in the 1901 census in Edmonton. Charlotte's entry is interesting. She is living in Beale Street, Edmonton, a lodger in the house of John Richardson, together with her 16 month old daughter, Nellie. Charlotte was born in St Luke, Middlesex, and Nellie was born in Sydney, NSW. Charlotte is recorded as being married and not a widow, but she is a lodger in the household so the information may not be reliable. There is no sign of James who, presumably, had either died or remained in Australia.
She must have met Stephen Pluck some time after this because May Mills was born in Edmonton in 1893 and Lily Mills in 1896. These girls appear in the 1901 census (along with Stephen, Charlotte and Nellie - recorded as a step-daughter) as May and Lily Pluck so it seems highly likely that Stephen was the father.
Stephen and Charlotte married in 1900 which tends to confirm that she was separated from her husband, and not a widow. At that time divorce was possible if one party to the marriage had "disappeared for seven years or more".
Charlotte was a patient in the Prince of Wales General Hospital, Tottenham at the time of the 1911 census. She died in Q3 1912.
2440 PLUCK Ada C1891; C1901: age 14. Three children known: Ada born in1913, Sidney in 1915 and Alfred in 1917. There were almost certainly others born between 1906 and 1911.
2435 PLUCK Alice Rhoda E C1901. Nothing found after 1901.
2425 PLUCK Arthur C1861 census, age 4. He died age 5 and was buried on16 Feb 1862.
2419 PLUCK Arthur William C1851: a day labourer, living with his widowed mother in Ponders End; C1861: now married, a higgler. His marriage certificate (1858) is confusing as it records his father as Thomas Pluck, labourer. However, in 1861 he is living in Claremont Street, Edmonton, as are his married sister, Harriet, and her family. His place (Ponders End) and date of birth both fit. Arthur was illiterate and probably unable to spot the mistake.
There is also a question mark over his death. I can not find the family in the 1871 census and Sarah was a widow in 1881. He must have died some time between the birth of his last child, John William, in 1866 and the 1881 census. He probably missed the GRO indexing process or was very badly copied into the index (which happened from time to time).
2443 PLUCK Arthur William C1901: age 8. In 1911 at age 18, Arthur is working as a barman. He is living at 49 Barbot Street, Edmonton with his brother John; boarding with Robert Henry Gibson (a flour salesman and miller) and his wife Rosina May Gibson.
2436 PLUCK Charles Henry He is in the 1901 census but not in the 1911 census. He probably went to Australia some time between these dates because there is a record of a C H Pluck as an employee of the Municipal Tramways Employee Register [register number: 3090] in the South Australia State Archives. DoB fits. He was employed from 19/9/1918 to 29/10/1918, i.e. not very long. He served in the Australian Infantry at Gallipoli and also in France. He wasn't a model soldier and was often in trouble - theft from a NZ soldier and frequent indiscipline. He married Caroline Gould in London while on leave from France. He was living in Balranald, NSW in 1937.
4510 PLUCK Daisy May She had two children
2420 PLUCK Eliza C1851: a silk winder, living with her widowed mother in Ponders End. She never married and (C1861-C1891) lived most of her adult life with her married sister, Harriet, and her husband Henry Taylor. She worked in a rubber factory.
2439 PLUCK Elizabeth Ellen C1891
2418 PLUCK Emma C1851: a weaver, living with her widowed mother in Ponders End. Her sister, Esther, was a witness at her marriage in 1855.
2422 PLUCK Esther C1851: a servant, living with her widowed mother in Ponders End. She gave birth to a daughter, (Esther Elizabeth) in the Union workhouse in April 1851. C1861, unmarried, a servant in the household of Edward (Officer, Great Northern Railway Co) and Emily Johnson. C1871: One of three servants in the household of James Pett, working as a nurse, presumably looking after his 78 year old mother-in-law (who was living on bank dividends). C1881: Cook in household of Walter Brydone, civil engineer, describes herself as a widow. C1891: now 61, widow, living on her own in Willesden, occupation: needlework (possibly shirt making).
3480 PLUCK Esther Elizabeth Born in the Union workhouse (her mother was not married). She was a witness at the marriage of her aunt Frances (together with George Raymond whom she subsequently married). On her marriage certificate her father was shown as William Pluck, presumably her deceased grandfather. A possible death in the Romford RD in 1916.
2421 PLUCK Frances C1851: a silk warper, living with her widowed mother in Ponders End. She married Robert White in 1866, witnesses were George Raymond and Esther Elizabeth Pluck.
3479 PLUCK Harriet No birth record found. Known from censuses; father identified on her marriage certificate. C1861: her unmarried sister, Eliza and her niece, Esther Elizabeth, are living with Henry & Harriet in Claremont Street. C1871: all four still living at Claremont Street: no change except that young Esther is now described as sister-in-law; Esther and Eliza are factory operatives. C1881: Eliza still with them (working in an India rubber factory), also 7 year old George Rayman, a nephew. C1891: Henry, now widowed, Eliza still working in the rubber factory, George Raymond now a stationer's assistant, together with Esther Raymond, aged 9. Henry & Harriett don't appear to have had any children.
2427 PLUCK Henry C1861: 2 months; C1881 unm, ag lab;C1901: C1911: not found. A possible death in the Romford RD in 1918.
2426 PLUCK James C1861: age 2; C1881: unm, labourer; C1891: with his family and living next door to his mother. C1901: a carman;
2442 PLUCK James C1901: age 10; C1911: living (in Fore Street) with his married sister, Mary Ann (Elmes), a general labourer. He served in WW1. Nothing found after this date.
4509 PLUCK John William He was killed at the age of 14 in an accident involving a runaway horse and a plough. [An account of his inquest is in the History section].
2444 PLUCK John William C1901: age 6
3471 PLUCK Joyce I Joyce died aged 28. She and Leslie had a daughter, Janice, in 1947.
3486 PLUCK Leslie J here are two possible marriages: (1) to Pamela B Wilcox in Q1 1980 in the Havering RD, and (2) to Shirley A Donoghue in Q2 1985 in the Shepway RD. Two Leslie J Plucks were born in the 50s: (1) Q2 1957 in the Essex SW RD and (2) Q2 1953 in the Edmonton RD. There are children of both marriages: WILCOX: Wayne (1980) and Ricky Lee (1983) , both born in Barking and Dagenham; and DONOGHUE: Barry Lee (Jul 1985), Dover RD, Craig Leslie (Jul 1985) Ashford RD and Laura Ann (Aug 1986) Ashford RD. Presumably Barry and Craig are twins but why they are registered in two different registration districts is a mystery.
I am inclined to believe that Leslie married Shirley Donoghue, since his sister, Kay, married in the Folkestone RD. But this is not proof.
2438 PLUCK Mary Ann 1891; C1901: age 18. Works in Eley's cartridge factory. Married in 1909; Thomas born in Q3 1912, Helen in Q2 1914. C1911: now married for 2 years, "1 child, still living" - but the child is not listed on the census return. Also listed are Mary Ann's 9 year old sister, Daisy, and her 20 year old brother, James.
2429 PLUCK Mary Jane C1881 a jute weaver, unm.
Her brother, Stephen, was a witness at her wedding.
2441 PLUCK Rose C1891; C1901. Nothing further found after 1901.
3476 PLUCK Stephen At present his parentage is known only from the 1851 census where he is living with his widowed mother; no baptism record has been found. C1861: labourer, newly married; C1871: ag lab., living at Clarks Cottage, Edmonton; C1881: labourer, living in Silver Street, Edmonton.
On 28 November 1853 he was sentenced at the Old Bailey to four years penal servitude, on a charge of housebreaking. A full account of the trial is in the History section. There is also a record of a Stephen Pluck appearing at the Middlesex County Sessions in 1849. He was found Not Guilty on a charge of Larceny. There is no personal information (age or residence) in the record to link him but it is probably the same man.
2428 PLUCK Stephen 1881: unm, ag lab.
C1891 unm, lodger, scaffolder
C1901: he is married to Charlotte Mills, who has an 11 year old daughter (Nellie Mills) by a previous marriage. He also has two daughters listed, May and Lily Pluck, born in Edmonton in 1894 and 1896.There are no birth records for these girls, nor any record of a previous marriage involving Stephen. However there are two birth records which probably go some way to explain the situation: May Mills b. Q4 1893, Edmonton, 3a, 414; and Lily Mills b. Q1 1896, Edmonton, 3a, 449.
He was a witness at his sister Mary Jane's marriage in 1885.
See notes relating to his wife Charlotte Mills.
The 1911 census form has been completed by his 15 year old daughter, Lilly. He is recorded as Stephen Pluck / Father (n.b not "Head) / 48 / married / for 19 years / 3 children / 3 still living / scafolder (sic) / born Edmonton. His wife, Charlotte, is not present as she is is a patient in the Prince of Wales General Hospital, Tottenham. She died in Q3 1912.
2416 PLUCK William His youngest child was born in 1832. His wife was a widow in 1851. He doesn't appear in the GRO death index so was probably dead by Sep 1837.
3482 RAYMONT George Described as a carrier on his marriage certificate in 1872, and a city carman in the 1881 census when he and Esther were living at 5 Claremont Street with their 4 year old daughter, Eliza. The Taylors, and Eliza Pluck, were living at No 7.
3493 RICE William A possible birth in the Edmonton RD in Q2 1887 [William Victor RICE, Edmonton 3a, 336].
3483 SMITH Henry A lighterman. His father, John Smith, was a wheelwright.
3478 TAYLOR Henry C1861: a carrier.
