The Family of William and Bridget Pluck
Origins
This is another small Irish twig. William and Bridget were both born in Ireland as were their children. I haven't been able to find any death records in the GRO indexes. Perhaps they returned to Ireland. Two of their grandchildren, John and Joseph, marry and then disappear - back to Ireland possibly, or more likely they emigrated further afield.
Unlinked/unused records
There are three unlinked Pluck entries in the Ashton Registration Registration district:
- Mar 1838 : death of Charles Pluck, Ashton & Oldham, 22, 48.
- Sep 1858 : marriage of Mary Pluck, Ashton-under-Lyne, 8d, 663 to either Miles Mitchell or Benjamin Barnes
- Sep 1864 : marriage of Mary Pluck, Ashton-under-Lyne, 8d, 870, to either Peter Mitchell or Samuel Garside
I can't explain any of these. They could be relations, over from Ireland. I wouldn't be surprised if both Marys married Mitchells.
The 1851 census has an Eliza, described as granddaughter (of William and Bridget). I haven't found a record of her birth (according to the census: 1845 in Stalybridge) or a death, marriage or subsequent census record. She could be a visitor over from Ireland, or possibly a daughter of Mary (PL2543).

2540 | PLUCK | Edward | C1841; C1851; C1861; C1881; C1891 The whole family are recorded under the surname Plunket in the 1861 census. Edward was married under that name in 1846. |
2561 | PLUCK | Elizabeth Ann | At first glance this birth in Q2 1853 might seem impossibly soon after the birth of Bridget in Q4 1852. These, however, are birth registrations and do not necessarily take place immediately after the birth. It is quite common to find a birth registration six weeks after the event (the longest delay on my database is 62 days), so a birth registered in Q4 1852 could have taken place in August 1852, and a birth registered promptly in Q2 1853 could have been as late as the end of June 1853. |
2539 | PLUCK | Ellen | Found in 1841 census - relationship assumed; not found in later censuses. |
2541 | PLUCK | John | Found in 1841 census - relationship assumed; not found in later censuses. There is a likely marriage in Q1 1846, Ashton & C 20, 80 to either Margaret Kelly, Harriett Rooke, Ellen Smith or Mary Turner. |
2547 | PLUCK | John | C1851: b. Stalybridge; C1861 |
2542 | PLUCK | Joseph | Found in 1841 census - relationship assumed; not found in later censuses. There is a marriage in Q2 1849, Ashton 20, 54 to either Mary Hart, Mary Kenney, Mary Tobin or Margaret O'Brien. Not found in later censuses. |
2543 | PLUCK | Mary | C1841; C1851 - is Eliza her daughter? |
2546 | PLUCK | Mary | C1851: b. Stalybridge; C1861 |
2562 | PLUCK | Mary Ann | Mary Ann just missed the 1851 census. I can't find her in the 1861 census, she is certainly not with her family, but there is a marriage in 1869 that looks like hers: Q1 1869, Ashton-under-Lyne 8d 649 to Henry Briggs or John Thomas Platt. |
2549 | PLUCK | Sarah Ann Booth | C1861 |
2537 | PLUCK | William | C1841; C1851 |
