PIGEON FLYING

The annual sweepstakes, which excited so much interest among the owners of “homing” pigeons, took place on Monday last (2 August 1880), from the Fox and Hounds, West Croydon, to Mr Oxton’s, the Joiners’ Arms, Church-street, Deptford. The whole of the birds (24) were bred this season, and 24 at £1 each were flown, a handsome silver watch being presented to the owner of the winning bird by Mr Oxton. There were marked for the fly 241 young birds, but only 24 performed. The result was as follows:- Mr Spencer’s blue bird Who would have Thought It first prize, the watch and £12, the distance being accomplished in 10min 41sec. Second prize of £8, Mr Blundell’s blue bird Deceiver, doing the distance in 12min. Third prize, Mr Bradshaw’s blue checker £4, who completed the journey in 12min 53sec. Mr Pluckrose was timekeeper at starting, and Messrs White and Church timekeepers at home. The whole affair passed off most satisfactorily.
