DRUNK WHILE IN CHARGE OF A HORSE AND CART

John George Pluckrose, a carman in the employ of Maple & Co., was charged with being drunk whilst in charge of a horse and van, on Tuesday, 5th of April. P.C. Dunmow, 299 S, deposed that at 12.30 on Tuesday morning he found a horse and van in a ditch at Brockley Hill, one man was asleep in the van, and the driver appeared a few moments after from the hedge and fell down in the middle of the road; finding he was so drunk he took him off to the station. Prisoner asked the constable how it was that he had managed to walk to the station if he was so drunk as the constable said he was. William Roundhill gave evidence in direct opposition to all that the constable had stated. William Cocksedge, inspector, deposed that Pluckrose was brought to the station drunk and covered in mud. The manager of the van department of Messrs. Maple & Co. spoke in the prisoner’s favour, stating that he had known prisoner for 13 years and had never had to complain of him. The bench fined the defendant 10s. 6d. and 5s. 6d. costs.
