AT THE CRYSTAL PALACE

At Penge Petty Sessions yesterday Frank Rose, aged 35, fish porter, of 45, Bastwick-street, Goswell-road, Islington; Thomas Pluckrose, 19, tailor’s trimmer, of 96, Norman-road, Leytonstone; and William Pluckrose, 18, marble mason, of 64, Colville-road, Leyton, were charged with being concerned together in attempting to pick pockets at the Crystal Palace on Easter Monday1. Detective-Sergeant Pike said he was on duty at the Palace with Detectives Allen and Blackmore on Bank Holiday, and he saw the prisoners go up and down the north staircase with the crowd several times. He saw William Pluckrose put his hand in two ladies’ dress pockets. Suddenly Rose looked round, and then turning to the other prisoners, said, “I believe that’s old Pike.” The three then hurried out of the Palace by the south door, and witness following arrested them in the street. Rose said to him: “You have arrested me because you know I am a pickpocket.” The others made no reply. Corroborative evidence having been given, remand was asked for. Detective Pike objected, mentioning that Rose was a professional thief. Rose: “You have no right to say that; whatever I may have been, I have been trying to get living honestly for the last three years.” The application for remand was granted, and the magistrates declined to accept bail.
