Bottisham & Poplar
(This Tree was formerly Tree1001)
Origins
The head of this tree is John Pluck. He is almost certainly the illegitimate son of John Pluck and Sarah Hammond. The Horseheath parish register states "John, son of Sarah HAMMOND and John PLUCK, as she has sworn". John can be found in Tree 1.
The reasons for making this link are:
- John was baptised on 11 March 1723 and married Susan Wiborough on 23 August 1853, so he would have been 20-21 when he married, which is not unreasonable for the period.
- He was baptised in Horseheath and married in West Wickham (his bride's parish). The two churches are a little over a mile apart. Bride and groom could have been neighbours.
- A search of the registers for most of the south Cambridgeshire and North Essex parishes in the vicinity of Linton, Ickleton and Horseheath does not produce any other candidate Pluck for this marriage.
So Tree1001 is now Tree19 and linked into the main branch. It is possible that Susan Wiborough was related to John's grandmother, Helen Wibrow.

3703 | PLUCK | Albert | Known only from 1911 census, not found in birth index. |
1123 | PLUCK | Alfred Cornwell | Since his birth is registered as Alfred Cornwell PLUCK is is very likely that the birth occurred before his parents were married. Both events were registered in the 4th quarter of 1874 and certificates would need to be purchased to resolve the issue. |

1127 | PLUCK | Charles Samuel | C1891; C1901; C1911. His death in the Steyning registration district is not easy to explain. It is possible that he was serving in the army and died in a hospital in the Brighton and Hove area. He and Annie had a child every other year (seven in total) from the time of their marriage until 1914. |

John's baptism is in the St Luke Millwall parish register along with the baptisms of five other children of presumably unmarried mothers resident in the Poplar Union. A note of the register records that the baptisms took place in the Poplar Union chapel. John William KING, described as 'son in law' aged 5 is present in the 1881 census in Charles and Jane's household. John William Pluck is also present in the 1891 census, described as 'son' aged 15.
