The Descendants of David Pluck
and Sarah King
Origins
This used to be Tree 101 - one of the "Loose branches". When I last did some work on this tree - back in 2009 - I didn't feel able to link the head of this tree, David Pluck, to any other tree, although there was some evidence that David could have his origins in Tree 4. Work over the past eight years has linked many more people into trees and has left fewer people isolated. I now feel reasonably confident that David is the son of William Pluck (PL0407) and Sarah Harriot (PL0468) - who can be found in Tree 4, the Arkesden branch. My reasons for making this link are as follows:
Back in 2009 I had an inkling that David, who heads this Tree, might be the son of William Pluck and Sarah Harriot who occur in Tree 4, the Arkesden branch. I was not able to find a christening record to confirm this, though, in spite of searching the relevant Arkesden Parish records [D/317/1/2 (1810-1812) and D/P 317/1/4 (1813-1817)]. I found Mary Ann (1810) and Samuel's (1812) baptisms, but nothing for David.
Although a baptism record has not been found for David, the censuses of 1851, 1861 and 1871 all record a birth in Arkesden in 1813.
Arkesden records are only found in Tree 1, which covers a much earlier period, and Tree 4. There are, of course, other possibilities in Tree 4 for being the father of David, apart from William. These are the four brothers of William. Listing all five brothers in order of birth, we have:
1 John (1760-1837), who married Lydia Harriot in Arkesden 1787. John and Lydia had two children in 1787 and 1791. I have not been able to find a record of Lydia's birth, so have no idea whether she would have been too old to be the mother of David in 1813. But a gap of 22 years since her last child makes this seem very unlikely. John and Lydia can be found in Tree 4.
2 Stephen (1764-1833) appears to have moved to Wendens Ambo, a village about 3 miles from Arkesden, at an early age. He married (twice) and had 6 children, all christened in Wendens, the last in 1803. He died and was buried in Wendens Ambo. He seems an unlikely candidate. Stephen and his family can be found in Tree 8.
3 William (1767-1837) was born and died in Arkesden. He married a local girl, Sarah Harriot in 1798. They had nine children over the period 1798 to 1812. All were christened in Arkesden. William and Sarah appear to be favourites for fathering David. Another child in 1813 is perfectly feasible. William and Sarah's family can be found in Tree 4.
4 Thomas (1772-1847) moved to Fowlmere, a village about 10 miles north of Arkesden. He married Mary Pearce in 1798 and they had 5 children between 1799 and 1808. All were christened in Fowlmere. Mary died in 1809. Thomas married again in 1815. He is unlikely to have been the father of David. Thomas and his family can be found in Tree 18.
5 Benjamin (1776-1828) married Mary January in Melbourn in 1801. Melbourn is about 11 miles NW of Arkesden, not far from Fowlmere. Benjamin and Mary had 6 children between 1802 and 1816, all christened in Melbourn. Benjamin could not have been David's father. The Melbourn branch can be found in Tree 17.
Of course, ruling out William's brothers is not proof that William and Sarah are David's parents. Only an unambiguous baptism record that names his parents can provide this.
There is some more evidence of a circumstantial nature in the names of David's children:
If you look at the names of the children of (1) William Pluck & Sarah Harriot (David's possible parents) and (2) the children of David Pluck & Sarah King then there is a strong correspondence. The names are tabulated below with the first column showing William's children and the second column David's. William's children are listed chronologically, David's are listed in an order that demonstrates a correspondence . . .

. . . which strongly suggests that David is William's son. This is not proof but the balance of probabilities is tipped strongly in favour of David being the child of William and Sarah. I have decided, therefore, that it is not unreasonable to link David as their tenth child.
Detailed Notes
PL No | Surname | Forenames | Notes |
0470 | PLUCK | David | A baptism record has not been found for David. The 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses all point to a birth in Arkesden in 1813. Normally I would not link anyone to undocumented parents but in this case there is sufficient circumstantial evidence to link David to William Pluck (PL0407) and Sarah Harriot (PL0468), who can be found in Tree4. The case for making this link has been covered in the introductory paragraph immediately above. |
0471 | KING | Sarah | C1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881. |
0472 | PLUCK | Samuel | C1841; C1851; C1861: age 25, born Arkesden; C1871; C1881; C1891; C1901 |

Martha is in the Stoke Newington Invalid Asylum and the five children are living with the Tyrer family in Spicer Road, Hornsey. Emily is 20 and Emma 18, so the young boys, James (9), Willie (6) and Johnny (2) are unlikely to have been neglected. |
0477 | PLUCK | Lydia | No GRO birth registration found. It was not compulsory at that time. C1891: living in Stamford Hill, 48, born Arkesden, a school caretaker; C1901: no change; C1911: widow, age 69, now living (alone) in Arkesden. No death record found. |
0478 | PLUCK | Jabez | Found in 1881 census, no children. Jabez (recorded as Jarvous) lived at no 108 Spencer Road. The family living at no 109 (across the road) must be connected in some way but it is not clear how. I suspect the house is shared, with one household being Joseph and Emma Tyrer and their 13 year old son Albert. Also in the house are: Emily Pluck (relationship to head left blank) unm 20 housemaid b Stamford Hill Emma Pluck daughter unm 18 housemaid b Stamford Hill James Pluck son 9 b S. Hornsey Willie Pluck son 6 b S. Hornsey Johnny Pluck son 2 b S. Hornsey. The 1871 census has the family of John Pluck (baker) living at 73 Spencer Road: John b 1842, Ann b 1842, Emma b 1864 and Amelia Ann b 1866 - all born in Essex. |

This information has allowed me to fit in two more children who both died soon after birth and would, therefore not show up in censuses. These are David (1890-1890) and Ellen Rosina (1898-1898). I am reasonably certain of these assignations because (1) they do no clash with other births and (2) they are in the right Registration District. The death record is for Elizabeth A Pluck, otherwise it fits perfectly. |
